Cliff Note: Music Today on the DTHH: Buddy Holly, Everly Bros, Sam Cooke maybe some Elvis and something special for the guys in Afghanistan, who smoked another Tango!

Today’s Required Reading:

Bob Owens: Writing in today’s New York Daily News, James Gordon Meek states that U.S. Army officials have disputed an email sent out by an American serviceman stationed at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, where the author claims that Barack Obama disrespected American servicemen by refusing to meet with them.

BlackFive: Here’s another email about Senator Obama’s visit to a base in a combat zone from an impeccable source – the first to paragraphs are redacted to protect the author (a 23 year vet of more than one branch of the military)

Andrew Klavan: Why is it then that left-wingers feel free to make their films direct and realistic, whereas Hollywood conservatives have to put on a mask in order to speak what they know to be the truth? Why is it, indeed, that the conservative values that power our defense — values like morality, faith, self-sacrifice and the nobility of fighting for the right — only appear in fantasy or comic-inspired films like “300,” “Lord of the Rings,” “Narnia,” “Spiderman 3″ and now “The Dark Knight”?

John Boehner: … the adjournment vote could be a defining one for the Democratic Majority. Casting a “yea” or “nay” on that vote would be the difference between heeding the calls of the American people, who strongly support more American-made energy to reduce gas prices, or continuing to defy their will by leaving town for five weeks of politics and vacations – and leaving them to fend for themselves amid energy costs that will only soar higher this fall and beyond.

National Review: “It’s easy now to pretend that the surge and its success was inevitable. It wasn’t. President Bush had to implement it against stiff political headwinds, made all the stiffer by the likes of Barack Obama. If Obama had had his way, we would have lost in Iraq. But he positioned himself exactly right in the Democratic primaries. This is shameful. The disgrace is not John McCain’s in pointing it out, but Barack Obama’s in having been so wrong — and letting politics so influence his mistaken position — on the war.”

Michael Barone: “We have banned oil drilling on a very small portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge that is godforsaken tundra (I have been to the North Slope oil fields, similar terrain — I know) for fear of disturbing a herd of caribou — a species of hoofed animals that is in no way endangered or scarce…ANWR is a precious cause for them because it can be portrayed (dishonestly) as a national treasure and because the pressure for drilling there has been unrelenting.”

Ed Morrissey: Hugo Chavez has tried to maneuver the US to the sidelines in South America, and he saw China as an ally in those efforts…industry analysts think China just played Chavez for a sap
