When Sarkozy Spoke Truth to Obama: The meeting was advertised by the White House as “historic,” if for no other reason than that no U.S. President has ever before stooped to chair the often feckless and at times just plain sleazy UN Security Council…and then it was the turn of the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy. Here’s his wakeup call, in the UN’s translation from the French.
Tom Maguire: The Security Council achieved unanimity in their resolution by clever diplomatic maneuvering which sidestepped the divisive question of whether Obama’s “dream” should be achieved through reliance on Magic Ponies or by means of the Care Bear Stare.
Michael Gerson: Twice in his United Nations speech, Obama dares to quote Franklin Roosevelt. I have read quite a bit of Roosevelt’s rhetoric. It is impossible to imagine him, under any circumstances, unfairly criticizing his own country in an international forum in order to make himself look better in comparison. He would have considered such a rhetorical strategy shameful — as indeed it is.
Don Surber: The New York Times ignored the ACORN story for more than a year now, going back to at least July 2008 when it decided not to pursue this tip: “The real story to all this is how these myriad entities allow them to shuffle money around so much that no one really knows what’s getting spent on what — and for the charities like the housing orgs, that’s a problem. Charitable money cannot be spent on political activities. It’s a big no-no that can cost charitable organizations their exemptions.” So what is its excuse now?
Bruce McQuain on Unintended Consequences: They don’t really want to regulate “neighbors helping neighbors”, but Rules are Rules. Then there is Cap and Trade with at least 397 new unintended consequences.
